Recovery in Detroit
Below is the email Jim wrote us after his Mac had been recovered by the Detroit police:
"Dear Orbicule,
I got my MacBook Pro back! I'd love to write a testimonial - what a great product. My MacBook Pro was stolen at the Hertz office at Detroit Metro Airport at 5:30 p.m. on November 8, 2010. By the time I noticed it was missing, no one could locate it. But then I remembered Undercover."
"I was on a business trip, but I asked my hosts if I could use their computer for a second, just to login to UndercoverCenter and mark the Mac as stolen. That was about 8:30 p.m. Then, nothing. I waited and waited, and figured the software wasn't working, or that perhaps the thief had been wise enough to not connect to the Internet."
"At 11:30 the next morning I got the first email: a picture (with such strong backlighting that you couldn't make out a face), a location, and picture of my screen. I was excited. But then, nothing else until 6:15 p.m. that night. I was at a business dinner when my email buzzed on my iPhone. I looked and sure enough, this time I had a clear picture. Not only that, but the pictures kept coming every eight minutes."
"Finally there was a big break: the thief started using Twitter, and I could read his Twitter login and name. At that point I managed to get a Detroit police detective interested - this was a crime he could easily solve! He busted the thief the next day, recovered my computer and everything else that was in my backpack. And, he found out that the bag was taken by a Hertz employee! I feel good that this may prevent some other Hertz customer from going through an experience like the one I did."
"Thank you for some beautiful software!"
